Sciatica

You may hear “Sciatica”  commonly used to describe any hip or thigh pain that radiates down the leg.

Specifically, Sciatica refers to irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body. The sciatic nerve receives inputs from the sacral plexus, which refers to the nerves that come off the sacrum into the pelvis. True “Sciatica” can present in many different ways.

Cause

Possible causes of sciatica include: tight or hypertonic piriformis, which is the muscle overlying the sciatic nerve as it exits the pelvis (see the section on Piriformis syndrome on our website to learn more), pelvic floor muscle spasm, or low back spasm.

Symptoms

  • Pain that originates in the deep gluteal region (back of the hip) and sends pain down the back of the thigh, sometimes as far as the foot.

  • Feelings of weakness, numbness, tingling, or burning, which are typical signs of nerve irritation/compression

  • Typically, symptoms are worsened with prolonged sitting, walking, standing, squatting, or lifting.
